When parents hear the words “early orthodontic treatment,” they often wonder if it means their child will need braces or invisalign sooner than expected. In reality, early treatment is recommended for only a small percentage of children—and only when it can make a meaningful difference.
The goal isn’t to start treatment as early as possible. The goal is to start at the right time.
At Ward+Campbell Orthodontics, we evaluate every child individually. For some, the best recommendation is simply to monitor growth. For others, addressing a developing problem early can make future treatment simpler, shorter and more predictable.
What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Early orthodontic treatment—sometimes called Phase 1 treatment—is orthodontic care provided while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth.
Unlike comprehensive braces or invisalign during the teenage years, early treatment focuses on guiding jaw growth and correcting specific developing problems before they become more difficult to treat.
Not every child needs early treatment. Many children simply benefit from routine monitoring until more permanent teeth have erupted.
When Is Early Treatment Recommended?
An early orthodontic evaluation allows us to determine whether treatment should begin or whether your child is developing normally.
Early treatment may be recommended for children with:
- Crossbites
- Underbites
- Significant overbites
- Severe crowding
- Narrow upper jaws
- Impacted or blocked permanent teeth
- Harmful thumb or finger sucking habits
- Jaw growth differences
Because every child develops differently, treatment decisions are based on growth—not simply age.
The Biggest Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
It Can Guide Jaw Growth
One of the greatest advantages of treating children while they are still growing is the opportunity to influence jaw development.
During childhood, the upper and lower jaws are still changing. Certain orthodontic appliances may help guide this growth, improving how the teeth fit together as permanent teeth erupt.
Once growth is complete, some of these problems become much more difficult to correct without more extensive treatment.
It May Reduce Future Treatment Complexity
Early treatment doesn’t always eliminate the need for braces or invisalign later.
However, it can reduce the severity of certain orthodontic problems, making future treatment more straightforward.
Depending on the individual case, early treatment may help:
- Create space for permanent teeth
- Improve bite alignment
- Correct crossbites before they affect jaw growth
- Reduce the likelihood of tooth extractions
- Improve eruption patterns
Every child’s treatment plan is unique, but early intervention can often simplify what comes next.
It Helps Protect Permanent Teeth
Children with protruding front teeth have a greater chance of damaging those teeth during falls, sports or everyday play.
In some situations, early orthodontic treatment can move these teeth into a safer position before an injury occurs.
Protecting healthy permanent teeth is one reason orthodontists sometimes recommend beginning treatment sooner rather than later.
It Can Improve Everyday Function
Orthodontic treatment is about much more than appearance.
A poor bite can make it difficult for children to:
- Bite into food comfortably
- Chew efficiently
- Close their teeth properly
- Speak clearly in some situations
Correcting these issues during growth may improve everyday function as well as long-term oral health.
Early Treatment vs. Waiting
|
Early Orthodontic Treatment |
Waiting Until Later |
|
Can guide jaw growth while bones are still developing |
Jaw growth opportunities may be reduced after development is complete |
|
May correct developing bite problems before they worsen |
Some problems may become more complex over time |
|
May create space for erupting permanent teeth |
Crowding may increase as additional teeth come in |
|
May reduce the complexity of later treatment |
Comprehensive treatment may still be needed, and in some cases may be more involved |
Waiting is not automatically the wrong decision. In fact, it is often the right one.
The key is knowing which children benefit from treatment now and which children benefit from continued observation.
Does Early Treatment Mean Two Full Rounds of Braces or Invisalign?
This is one of the questions we hear most often.
Sometimes.
Some children who receive Phase 1 treatment later receive a second phase of treatment after most permanent teeth have erupted.
That does not mean the first phase was unnecessary.
The first phase addresses a specific developmental problem that cannot always be corrected as effectively later. The second phase focuses on fine-tuning tooth alignment once all permanent teeth are present.
Many children never need Phase 1 treatment at all. Others benefit tremendously from it.
Signs Your Child Might Benefit From Early Treatment
Although only an orthodontic examination can determine whether treatment is appropriate, parents should consider scheduling an evaluation if they notice:
- Teeth that don’t line up correctly
- Difficulty biting or chewing
- Persistent thumb sucking
- Mouth breathing
- Crowded front teeth
- An underbite or crossbite
- Baby teeth lost much earlier or later than expected
- A jaw that shifts when biting
Even if your child has no obvious symptoms, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 because many developing problems cannot be identified without a professional examination.
Why Monitoring Is Sometimes the Best Treatment
One of the biggest surprises for parents is learning that the best recommendation is often to do nothing—for now.
If your child’s teeth and jaws are developing normally, we may simply recommend periodic growth evaluations.
These visits allow us to:
- Monitor erupting permanent teeth
- Track jaw development
- Identify the ideal time for treatment
- Avoid starting braces or invisalign before they’re truly needed
Thoughtful monitoring helps ensure treatment begins when it offers the greatest benefit.
Early Evaluation Creates Better Decisions
The greatest benefit of early orthodontic treatment isn’t that every child starts treatment sooner.
It’s that every child has the opportunity to receive the right treatment at the right time.
An early orthodontic evaluation provides valuable information about growth, bite development and future treatment needs. Whether your child needs treatment immediately, years from now or not at all, understanding their development allows you to make informed decisions with confidence.
At Ward+Campbell Orthodontics, we take a personalized approach to every child we see. If your child is approaching age 7 or you’ve noticed changes in their bite or jaw development, our team can evaluate their smile and explain whether early treatment, continued monitoring or no treatment is the best next step.
