You just realized your retainer is missing, and your heart sinks. Whether it was accidentally thrown out with a napkin, left behind at a hotel, or mysteriously vanished from your backpack, one thing is certain: it’s gone.
If this sounds like you, don’t panic. Losing your retainer happens more often than you’d think, and the key is acting quickly.
At Ward + Campbell Orthodontics, we help patients recover from orthodontic mishaps every day. Here’s what you should do if you’ve lost your retainer, plus tips to prevent it from happening again.
Don’t Delay, Time Matters
Your teeth can start shifting surprisingly fast once your retainer is no longer in place, sometimes within days.
The longer you wait, the more likely your teeth will begin to shift. That’s why it’s important to act within a day or two if possible.
Check Every Place It Could Be
Before assuming your retainer is truly gone, retrace your steps. Common places retainers hide:
- Wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant
- Inside your pillowcase or bedsheets
- At a friend’s house or sleepover location
- In a coat pocket, backpack, or gym bag
- Around your bathroom or under furniture
If you wore it during travel, call the hotel, airline, or venue where it might have been left behind. Many places are used to dealing with lost dental appliances and will hold them if found.
Contact Your Orthodontist ASAP
Once you’ve confirmed it’s lost, call our office. At Ward + Campbell Orthodontics, we can:
- Check if we have your retainer model or scan on file
- Schedule you for a quick replacement appointment
- Assess if any tooth movement has already occurred
If your retainer was made using 3D digital scans (which we keep securely on file for many patients), we may be able to make a new one without an in-person visit. Otherwise, we’ll get you in quickly for a re-scan.

Don’t Try DIY Fixes
We’ve seen it all: melted retainers in hot water, “creative” paperclip solutions, and glue disasters.
Please don’t try to bend a backup retainer into place or mold something yourself. Ill-fitting devices can:
- Damage your gums or teeth
- Cause bite misalignment
- Lead to more extensive (and expensive) treatment
If your old retainer is cracked but not fully broken, call us. We’ll tell you if it’s safe to wear temporarily until a new one is ready.
Watch for Tooth Movement
While waiting for your replacement, check your smile daily in the mirror. If you notice:
- Teeth beginning to shift or rotate
- Pressure or discomfort when biting
- Changes in your speech or bite alignment
Let us know right away. We may need to re-evaluate your treatment plan or consider an active retainer to regain proper alignment.
Ask About Our Retainer Program
We offer a Retainer Program. Here’s why:
- It reduces cost of having a backup retainer. One retainer stays at home, the other travels with you
- You’ll have a backup in case of loss or breakage and be sent a new retainer every 12 months.
- It gives peace of mind during vacations or events.
At your next visit, ask us about our retainer program which is a great way to protect your investment.
Tips to Avoid Losing Your Retainer Again
We get it. Retainers are small, clear, and easy to misplace. Here’s how to prevent future slip-ups:
Always Use Your Retainer Case
Never wrap it in a napkin. Keep a labeled, brightly colored case in your backpack, purse, or nightstand.
Make It Part of Your Routine
Put your retainer in the same place every day. Habit prevents forgetfulness.
Don’t Leave It Around Pets
Dogs especially love chewing on retainers. Keep them stored safely out of reach.
Pack a Travel Case
When you’re away from home, bring a backup case so you’re not tempted to leave your retainer out in the open.
Add a Reminder
If you’re forgetful, use a phone alarm or sticky note to prompt you to remove, clean, or store your retainer properly.
